Pelf Nyok Chen (Malaysia)

I have just graduated with a Master of Science degree in Conservation Biology (2008) from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu. My Master's research involved raising a species of critically-endangered freshwater turtles, known as the river terrapins (Batagur baska) in captivity before releasing them back into the river.

I conducted some feeding experiments on the terrapin hatchlings to determine the best practices to raise them in captivity -- how much food they need per feeding, how frequently they should be fed, how many of them could be stocked in a fiberglass tank before they start to bite each other, etc.

For my Ph.D., I am thinking about tracking the river terrapins that I have raised, to learn more about their behaviour in the wild.

Being awarded the ASPin-situCC scholarship was the best thing that have happened to me so far. Not only did I get to meet turtle scientists whom I have only dreamed of meeting, I was also able to participate in their current research. I have also had the opportunity to meet student researchers whom I have never thought of meeting. And my experiences have truly deepened my knowledge and broaden my views on turtle research and conservation.
